SEPTEMBER 2008

Experience a Complete Taste of México in Washington D.C.

For the first time in history, the Embassy of Mexico, in conjunction with the Mexico Tourism Board and the Mexican Cultural Institute, will host A Taste of Mexico in Washington, D.C., a festival to honor Mexico’s uniqueness and diversity.

This week-long event will be dedicated to giving residents of Washington a complete journey through Mexico's culture, travel destinations, cuisine and traditions.

For Mexico, gastronomy is an essential part of any society. People who have visited the country know it very well!  But those who haven’t been there must get ready!

From September 6th through the 12th , five Mexican restaurants - Rosa Mexicano, Zengo, Oyamel, Casa Oaxaca and Mio - will host the flavors of Mexico's different regions. A special menu will be prepared with the most representative Mexican dishes of the territories, seasons and historical times. Because September is the month of MEXICO, this is a great time for Washingtonians to experience a taste of Mexico.

Everything begins with the Open House at the Mexican Cultural Institute, during which those interested in learning why corn is found so often in Mexican cuisine, what makes Mexican chile peppers so unique or what the origins of Tequila are, will have the entire day to do so. Lectures, Mexican product tastings, art exhibitions and live music performances will be the perfect prelude to the celebration of a unique journey of taste and sensations.

Those interested in experiencing how ingredients differ from one region to another, or how ancient recipes and techniques are used in contemporary times, just need to find a table at any of the participating restaurants. This will be the best way to enjoy the creations prepared by teams of invited local chefs and well-known Mexican chefs.

Gastronomy is an essential part of any society because it reflects people’s culture. As the culture changes, the gastronomy changes.  In this way, history, traditions, geography and beliefs create the uniqueness and diversity of Mexico.
